Thirteen people died while trying to escape an illegal party in Peru

At least 13 people died and six others were injured, including three police officers, when they tried to flee a clandestine party in Lima, Peru, after the arrival of the police, who made 23 arrests, the Interior Ministry said on Sunday.

The deaths occurred on Saturday night when most of the approximately 120 people present at the party ran over each other and were crushed between the entrance door and a staircase.

The Interior Ministry clarified, quoted by the Spanish news agency Efe, that the police did not use weapons or tear gas as described by local residents to local media.

In Peru, night curfews are in effect, from 10 pm to 4 am, and family and social gatherings are prohibited as part of the measures imposed by the Government to prevent further infections of the covid-19.

Since the beginning of the measures, police interventions at parties and social gatherings have been frequent, but an event with over 50 people had not yet been registered.

According to Efe, Peru is the sixth country in the world and the second in Latin America with the most confirmed new coronavirus, with more than 585 thousand infections and more than 27,400 deaths.

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed at least 800,000 deaths and infected more than 23 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.
