The president abruptly “entered” the leadership battle in the BSP

The new Minister of Justice Krum Zarkov is the opponent of Kornelia Ninova for the post, Vesela Lecheva, who returned to the sports department – the face of the internal opposition, and Yavor Gechev turned when his comrades fired him as Deputy Minister of Agriculture

With the election of Krum Zarkov as Minister of Justice, Rumen Radev suddenly “entered” the battle for the leader of the BSP.

The young lawyer does not hide that he will face Cornelia Ninova, regardless of when the internal party vote for leader will be. When Ninova resigned last fall after her third consecutive election loss, Zarkov was the first to publicly declare herself as her competitor for the first post in the BSP. However, a new election was never reached because her resignation was rejected by the congress in January.

In recent months, together with the mayor of Pernik, Stanislav Vladimirov, and the MEP Petar Vitanov, they have formed a trio and are touring the country for discussions with members and in an attempt to revive party life.

Last fall, his mother – the famous journalist Anna Zarkova, became one of the three persons at the head of the initiative committee to elevate the president to a second term. And Radev and Iliyana Yotova chose Ruse – the region where the young socialist was the leader of the vote in November – to close their election campaign.

Zarkov got off to a flying start in politics precisely thanks to Ninova

In 2016, with only 2 years of party membership, he sat on the Executive Bureau. The newly elected leader personally invited him, which was a surprise to many given his party history. Because the doors of the BSP were opened to him by one of Ninova’s fiercest opponents – Atanas Merdzhanov, and then the young lawyer worked in the office of the former MEP Georgi Pirinski, who today is among the main critics of the leader.

In fact, the choice of Ninova was very far-sighted – Zarkov took over the baton from the old generation of left-wing lawyers (significant names such as Lyuben Kornezov, Mikhail Mikov, Tatyana Doncheva and Maya Manolova), after some time this flank of the parliamentary group had been exposed. He graduated in law from the Sorbonne, specialized at the Academy of International Law in The Hague, and worked at the Center for Research and Sciences in the Field of Public International Law in France. He was an inspector-lawyer at the Commission for the establishment of property acquired from criminal activity, as well as in the internal committee of the parliament. His grandfather is Gen. Leonid Katsamunski, former head of the national investigation, judge and prosecutor.

For a long time, Zarkov was part of the leadership, and despite his disagreement with some of its decisions, he did not allow himself to publicly criticize. In April of last year, however, only one of the IB of the BSP raised his voice and demanded the resignation of Ninova, when the Reds became the third political force from second. He was removed from the narrow party leadership.

Recently, only one of the Social Democrats voted against the inclusion in the agenda of the National Assembly of the changes with which the paper ballot is returned. And by exactly 1 vote, the point did not pass.

Despite Ninova’s warning

not to include people from the BSP behind her back in the office

Radev attracted two more prominent socialists. Both they and Zarkov are members of the National Council of the party. There is no decision from the plenum for all three.

The new sports minister, Vesela Lecheva, is among Ninova’s fiercest critics. She also sharply opposed the war that “Positano” waged openly with the president last year.

Lecheva was the head of the State Agency for Youth and Sports under the triple coalition, the predecessor of the current ministry. She is a two-time Olympic runner-up in sports shooting. She became world champion 5 times, European champion 8 times.

Yavor Gechev, on the other hand, became the incumbent in agriculture, after having already been deputy minister several times. A year ago, the BSP plenum sanctioned Yanaki Stoilov to become Minister of Justice for the “Yanev 1” office. However, several other socialists, including Gechev, became deputy ministers. Most were from the internal opposition, and although it turned out that Gechev agreed to accept the post, he was counted among the “disobedient”. And when the “Petkov” cabinet came to power, and agriculture became the portfolio of the Reds, Gechev was replaced. He got involved in the signatures of the opposition, with which they wanted a present session of the National Assembly of the BSP for Ninova’s resignation.

Gechev is the first chairman of the Youth Union of the BSP

Agricultural engineer with a master’s degree in plant protection. He was an agricultural producer, and rose from an expert in the DF “Agriculture” to the head of the Regional Payment Agency in Plovdiv. From 2016 until his entry into the office m.y. headed the National Union of Agricultural Cooperatives in Bulgaria.
