Workers at the port of Calais in northern France found the body of a 19-meter whale weighing about 15 tons on shore. This was announced by the regional newspaper La Voix du Nord, quoted by Focus.
The marine mammal was seen on Saturday afternoon. According to eyewitnesses, the animal probably hit the metal support of the logistics terminal and after being hit, was thrown ashore near the rock embankment of the port.
Jacques Corpuzopoulos, head of the Coordinating Council for the Protection of Mammals in Northern France, said the animal was dead when he arrived. He added that the whale’s remains would be removed at high tide on Monday and an autopsy would be performed on Tuesday morning. According to the animal rights activist, the arrival of a whale at the port is unusual in itself.
“They are open-water animals. They come to the shores only when fish passages appear to feed and follow the sea currents, or when they are sick, they have problems with orientation, as in this case. If they get too close to the sandy shore or enter a port, and rest their bellies on the bottom, or as in the case of Calais, touching the dike with stones, their own weight will crush them, “he explained.
