The autonomous communities have notified the Ministry of Health this Friday 141,095 new cases of Covid-19, 53,606 of them diagnosed in the last 24 hours, after the 157,447 infections reported this Thursday. The total number of positives now rises to 8,975,458 cases since the start of the pandemic.
This Friday’s Health data reflects a slight decrease in infections compared to the previous week, in which 162,508 cases were registered.
The cumulative incidence has increased more than 200 points, standing at 3,418.46 infections per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days; an increase from 3,279.36 points on Thursday. The reason behind this new rise, after three continuous days of decrease in the accumulated incidence, is explained by the fact that previously the incidence did not include public holidays.

Reduce quarantines?

The best protection, the vaccine
Three major studies published this Friday by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, in English) confirm that the best protection against the omicron variant of the coronavirus is the booster dose of vaccines against Covid-19.
According to one such analysis, which sampled nearly 88,000 hospitalized patients in ten states, the booster dose was 90 percent effective in preventing hospital admissions in December and January, months in which omicron has become prevalent in the US.
Given these data, receiving two doses of the vaccine was 57% effective six months after receiving the second.
What’s more, the booster shot was 82% effective in preventing ER visits, compared to 38% in those who had received two doses and had spent six months after the second, indicates the study, which reviewed more than 200,000 visits in ten states.
The other CDC study concluded that people who have received three doses are less likely to be infected with omicron.
CDC researchers found with this analysis, conducted with data from 25 states and local health departments, that among those who received the booster vaccine, there are 149 weekly cases of covid per 100,000 people, compared to 255 for each 100,000 among those who received two doses.
