The EC Takes Action to Address the Growing Threat of Wolf Packs in Europe

“The concentration of wolf packs in some regions of Europe has become a real danger for livestock and potentially for people,” said the EC president.

According to the Habitats Directive of the European Union (EU), which was originally adopted in 1992, wolves have the status of protected animals.

However, local and national exceptions are possible to these norms, and Leyen urged the authorities to “take steps where necessary”.

“Indeed, current EU law already allows them to do that,” she added.

The President of the EC encouraged local communities, scientists and officials to submit data on the number of wolves and their impact to the EC in the form of an e-mail by September 22.

Using this information, the EC will then decide how to modify wolf protection rules, “introducing more flexibility where necessary”.
