The Burmese military raided the headquarters of the National League for Democracy led by Aung San Suu Kyi on Tuesday night in Yangon; the United States once again condemned the Burmese military for suppressing anti-coup protesters; the European Union will introduce new sanctions against the Burmese military.

Two elected members of the National League for Democracy led by Aung San Suu Kyi in Myanmar said that the Myanmar military raided the headquarters of the National League for Democracy in Yangon on Tuesday night. They said that more than 10 military police forcibly entered the headquarters of the National League for Democracy. The National League for Democracy announced later on its Facebook page: “The military dictator raided and destroyed the headquarters of the National League for Democracy at around 9:30 pm.”

Demonstrations broke out across Myanmar for days, demanding that the military release the detained Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and other officials and senior leaders of the National League for Democracy. In the capital Naypyidaw, the police dispatched water cannons to disperse the demonstrators and fired into the sky as warnings. Local media reported that the police fired rubber bullets. At least four people were shot and sent to hospital. One man was shot in the chest and another woman was shot in the head. The situation is critical.

In Mandalay, the second largest city, people ignored the ban on gatherings of more than five people and continued to protest in the streets. At least 27 people were reportedly arrested, including journalists.

Agence France-Presse reported that the United States on Tuesday again condemned the Myanmar military’s force to suppress the demonstrators and called on the authorities to respect the people’s freedom of speech. US State Department spokesperson Price said that all Myanmar citizens have the right to speak, associate and assemble peacefully. The United States calls on the military to transfer power, restore a democratically elected government, remove all communication restrictions, and avoid mobilization of force.

In addition, Borelli, the EU’s senior representative for foreign and security policy, said on Tuesday that the EU will introduce new sanctions against the Myanmar military. He emphasized that these sanctions will not harm the people of Myanmar. Borelli said that the European Union is discussing all “options” and the new sanctions may lock companies and individuals belonging to the military.
