THE BALL – Umaro Sissoco Embaló confirms inauguration for Thursday (Guinea-Bissau)

Major-General Umaro Sissoco Embaló confirmed this Sunday that he will take office as President of Guinea-Bissau next Thursday, and that the ceremony will be symbolic “to avoid costs to the state coffers”.

Moments after arriving at Osvaldo Vieira international airport, in Bissau, from Dakar, capital of Senegal, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, who, according to the National Elections Commission, won the presidential elections on December 29, confirmed his inauguration on Thursday -market.

Asked if he would take office even without a decision by the Supreme Court of Justice, Umaro Sissoco Embaló said that the «Supreme Court will have time to speak out».

«I let the Supreme do his job and I will do my political work. This will have two phases. There is a symbolic thing, as I always said, my inauguration would not bring costs to the coffers of the State ”, he said.

The Supreme Court, which in Guinea-Bissau also has the powers of an electoral court, maintains an arm with the National Elections Commission, which requires it to do the national counting of electoral results, according to the law.

On Friday, the Standing Committee of the Movement for Democratic Alternation (Madem-G15, leader of the opposition) and party that supported the candidacy of Umaro Sissoco Embaló, instructed its parliamentary group to request, “as a matter of urgency”, a swearing-in session.

The CNE, which has already published the final electoral results, giving Umaro Sissoco Embaló victory, with 53.55% of the votes, and attributing to Domingos Simões Pereira 46.45%, says that he “exhausted” his intervention “in the electoral process” .
