Diogo Costa was one of Portugal’s surprises in the game against Turkey (3-1), in the semi-finals of the qualifying play-off for the 2022 World Cup. The goalkeeper made his debut as a starter in official matches and did not hide his joy.
“Clearly it was very special for me, I work for this and do what I love every day. I’m very proud of myself, very grateful for having worked with focus», he explained, revealing the moment he knew he was going to start: «When we arrived at Estádio do Dragão. It was very special to me, very chilling. I gave my all in all training and games and I knew that by doing that I would be in this match».
The FC Porto goalkeeper ended up being highlighted in a key moment, when Turkey missed the penalty that could have meant the 2-2.
«On the penalty kick I thought he was going to send it to my left, his body told me that and maybe he missed because he saw me shoot that way», he justified, later talking about the advice that Ronaldo gave him: «I told trust my instinct because I could solve the game there. It is an honor to be able to play with him».
Finally, Diogo Costa has already set his eyes on the clash with North Macedonia.
“I think players have to respect all teams. It’s difficult and we have to respect everyone”, he concluded.
