Terrorist Threat on Cologne Cathedral: Authorities on Alert for New Year’s Eve Attack

German authorities said Saturday they had received a tip that a terrorist group was planning attack on Cologne Cathedral in the coming days, DPA reported. Specifically, the alert referred to New Year’s Eve, but already yesterday the services searched the cathedral with dogs and set up surveillance and security at the temple.

The authorities did not provide further details on the tip they received, but said police in the German city will take special protective measures.

“Bild” reported that officials in Germany, Austria and Spain have received reports that that Islamists have prepared several attacks in Europe over the holidays.

As possible targets of the Islamist cell in the “Bild” publication, Christmas liturgies in Cologne, Vienna and Madrid. The German daily reported several arrests in the Austrian capital and one in Germany.

The authorities in Cologne advised visitors to avoid carrying bags or arriving too early for mass at church.
