Taxi driver describes how he uncovered trickery

DARMSTADT – May 22, 2020, Daniel Ehssan N. will not be forgotten so quickly. On this Friday afternoon, the taxi driver, who usually takes over airport trips with his company Rhein-Main Transfer, is supposed to drive an older lady. Around 5:00 p.m. the 90-year-old woman in Arheilgen gets into his taxi, a “valuable” package in her hand, as the police report will later say.

Daniel Ehssan N. immediately notices the parcel in question, which the elderly woman is holding tightly in her hands, the behavior of the woman seems strange to the taxi driver. She has to send something valuable to a friend, she replies when asked about her goal. But where should it go? To the post office at Luisenplatz or at the main train station? At first the lady has no answer.

Do not reveal the contents of the package

On the way to the city center, the taxi driver checks and wants to know where the parcel should be sent to, whether they know the acquaintance personally or only from the phone. The 90-year-old replies only by phone. “It all seemed very strange to me,” recalls the taxi driver. He asks if the lady has children and if he can call them about the package. His passenger vigorously denies that the acquaintance has prohibited her.

Daniel Ehssan N. suspects nothing good, fears the elderly woman might have fallen for tricksters. Since the lady does not want to tell him what is hidden in the valuable cargo, he uses a white lie to confirm his suspicions. “I told her that if there were documents in the parcel, we had to go to Luisenplatz, and to the main station for cash, because the parcel was X-rayed and insured there,” explains the German with Afghan roots. “Then to the train station,” replies the woman, who now feels uncomfortable because of the driver’s many questions and begins to distrust him.

Processing fee for alleged profit

Once at the train station, the woman pays for her trip and disappears into the post office. Daniel Ehssan N. immediately notifies the police, who advise him to follow the lady into the branch and keep an eye on her. When she sees the taxi driver, however, she reacts angrily, feels persecuted and runs away from him.

Only the police can finally clarify the situation. As it turns out later, the 90-year-old was about to send a four-digit sum abroad because of calls in the morning that suggested that she had won a competition and had to pay an administration fee to get her winnings.

The police praise Daniel Ehssan N.’s actions, which could have prevented worse at the last moment. Intervention is a matter of course for the taxi driver. “The lady was furious with me, but it didn’t leave me alone,” he explains his persistent behavior, which ultimately led to a good end for everyone involved.
