Lörrach – This suspicion causes bewilderment: A 53-year-old man from the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district is accused of repeatedly abusing a child who, according to the police, he is supposed to have taught at a school in the Lörrach district – although the suspect is prohibited from working with children to work. The police headquarters in Freiburg announced that the man was already “well-known”. The investigations are just beginning and will be continued in the man’s environment and at the school.
Suspect worked at school for six years
The suspect was arrested on Thursday morning and brought before the judge at the Freiburg District Court. The ordered custody. The public prosecutor said that the man had previously been investigated undercover for several days and then his apartment in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district, where the acts were said to have taken place, was searched.
According to the First Public Prosecutor Ralf Langenbach, the child is attending a school in district Lörrach. The accused had been working there from 2014 until this summer. The public prosecutor’s office has not yet announced whether it is a state or a private school. It is also not yet clear whether other children have been harmed. That is the subject of further investigation.
Why did the control mechanism fail?
The judiciary and the police are generally very hesitant to make it public if there is a suspicion of sexual abuse against children. Therefore, in this case one deliberately refrains from providing more detailed information. According to Langenbach, the main reason for this was that the public was approached in this case because the investigation was being conducted at a school and therefore in public anyway. And: “Of course you will have to ask yourself: How did this come about?” Said Langenbach. The fact that the accused has received a job at a school may also have to be judged under criminal law.
According to its director Hans-Joachim Friedemann, the state education authority in Lörrach does not know which school it is. The office should know that by now if it were a teacher at a school because, according to Friedemann, there is an obligation to report. Before teachers were hired, even if it was only for a disease representation, they would have to submit an extended certificate of good conduct, he explained. This also applies to lateral and lateral entrants. How the control mechanism failed in this case and how the accused could still teach at a school in the Lörrach district for years, he could not explain, Friedemann said.
Friedemann also refers to the child protection concepts of schools. They are designed to get students to talk about abuse and become familiar with the subject. If there is a strong suspicion, the accused receives an immediate ban and can no longer provide information until the facts have been finally clarified.
