State Institute for School Quality in Saxony-Anhalt Launches Revision of Primary School Curricula for 2026/27 School Year

At the State Institute for School Quality and Teacher Training of the State of Saxony-Anhalt (LISA), a total of ten specialist commissions have begun their work to revise the specialist curricula of the primary school type.

The current resolutions and publications of the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK) as well as the discourses in education and educational sciences require editing of the policy volume and the subject curricula, which have been valid since 2007 and adapted in 2019.

State Secretary for Education Jürgen Böhm: “The primary school is the first common school to be a place of learning and living for students with different biographical and cultural experiences. It forms the foundation for our children’s further education. It is therefore crucial that the curricula of this type of school are adapted to the latest educational policy and didactic developments. The revision is an important step in ensuring that our students are best prepared for the demands of the future.”

The following points are the focus of the revision:

  • Consideration of the KMK educational standards for the primary level for mathematics and German,
  • Strengthening the basic skills of reading, writing and mathematical skills,
  • Strengthening educational language skills in the German language,
  • systematic integration of education for sustainable development, in accordance with the 17 global sustainability goals of the United Nations and the sustainability strategy of the state of Saxony-Anhalt,
  • Checking whether the already established requirements for teaching and learning in the digital world are up to date,
  • Strengthening interdisciplinary and interdisciplinary work through interdisciplinary topic complexes that focus on education for sustainable development,
  • Democracy education and anti-Semitism prevention.

The specialist commissions consist of teachers, trainers, specialist seminar leaders, scientific experts and LISA employees. They will check the current curriculum for primary schools to ensure it is up to date and fundamentally revise it in accordance with current educational policy and subject-didactic developments. The results of the work in the commissions will serve as a binding curricular basis for the work at primary schools in Saxony-Anhalt for the 2026/27 school year.

Böhm continues: “In this way, the commissions set the course for future-oriented education and assume a high level of responsibility.”
