South Korea tightens rules for internet contact with North Koreans | NOW

There will be stricter rules for South Koreans who have contact with residents of neighboring North Korea via the internet. The South Korean government wants to have it recorded that residents must from now on request permission before e-mails or digital files are exchanged, reports news agency Yonhap Monday.

The South Korean Ministry of Unification had already made it clear in January that it wanted new rules. The department clarified on Monday that it concerns, for example, the exchange of books or films via the internet.

A spokesperson said that more and more files or software are sent over the internet these days. That is why the regulations must be overhauled to clarify which guidelines apply to the exchange of such materials. The intention is that the minister will soon have to give permission for this.

South Koreans also need government permission to interact with residents of the neighboring country, where Kim Jong-un’s dictatorial regime is in power.

The countries never formally concluded peace after the Korean War between 1950 and 1953. The warring parties then concluded an armistice, but not a full-fledged peace treaty.
