Snow has arrived, lots of snow and strong winds in NYC

Be careful tonight as a major winter storm that has started will bring dangerous snow and ice precipitation to the city.

At times the snow will be heavy. Beware of snowy and icy streets and sidewalks. The most intense snowfall is expected for Wednesday night.

By early Thursday morning the build-ups will exceed 5 inches and could be as high as 12 inches (about 30 centimeters). The snowfall rate will be 1 to 2 inches per hour.

The city’s Sanitation department indicates that the heaviest of the snowfall will be from 7 pm

The department asks that the streets be cleared so that its workers on salt trucks and ice cleaners can do their jobs.

It’s a good night to stay home.

If you go out, don’t drive and stay close to home.

Also be prepared for the cold and wind. Temperatures will be near the freezing mark and wind gusts could exceed 30 mph. Snow will mix with sleet and rain at times.

On Thursday, the snow and ice end at noon.

Keep an eye out for snow and ice falling from buildings and bridges after the storm. Temperatures on Thursday will not be much above the freezing mark.

The cold trend will also persist on Friday, so don’t expect it to melt too much.
