Russia sets date for its first trip to the moon after 45 years of pause (+ Video) ›World› Granma

After 45 years, Russia will launch its first lunar mission, which generates great expectations internationally.

Russian local media reported on Monday that the first lunar mission in the country’s modern history is scheduled for October 1, 2021.

Igor Mitrofanov, head of the Nuclear Planetology Center at the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences confirmed the news on this day.

During a meeting of the Academy Council dedicated to outer space, it was also known that the possible launch will take place after a 45-year hiatus in those space operations.

Luna 24 was the last spacecraft launched to the Moon by the Soviet Union, and its launch occurred on August 9, 1976 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome.

In the course of its modern history, Russia has never sent spacecraft to the moon “so the name of our spacecraft, Luna 25, continues the numbering of local lunar missions of the past century,” Mitrofanov explained.
In the new mission, Russia plans to send a centaur robot to the moon.

Two zones located at the south pole of the Moon were chosen for the device to perform the moon landing. One of them, to the north of Boguslavski crater, will be the main one and the other, to the southwest of the backing Manzinus crater.
