Remembering Stella Zázvorková: A Celebration of the Life and Legacy of a Czech Icon

From nanny to queen, Stella became famous as one of the greatest Czech female comedians of the 20th century. However, her acting range was considerably wider – from the nanny in the Crazy Sad Princess to the caring mother Majerová in the series Arabela to, for example, Queen Anežka in the fairy tale How the Princess Wakes Up. Director Václav Vorlíček (†88), who liked to cast her in his comedies (How to Drown Dr. Mráček, How about Spinach), made an exception and in the film version of Sleeping Beauty she played the relatively serious role of the queen and the mother of two adult princes – Jaroslav ( Jan Hrušínský, 68) and Jiří (Jan Kraus, 70). Both of them gave her a lot of trouble during the filming.

Broken leg

The actors were accommodated in a hotel in Telč. Princess Růženka representative Marie Horáková (63) had a room between Hrušínský and Kraus. The two Janovs then agreed that they would surprise her and that they would climb into her room over the ledge. But it broke off with Hrušínský, so Prince Jaroslav flew through the glass pane into the hotel restaurant and broke his femur! When he returned to filming after convalescence, he ran into Jiří Sovák (†79) in the dressing room, who greeted him with the words: “We also drank and fell, but never from such a height!” fights with Vladimír Menšík (†58), who played the servant Matěj in this fairy tale. This role was written for him, so to speak.

Anniversary of the death of Stella Zázvorková: Remember her life and role!

And the glassmakers will have nothing to eat…

It might seem that in the Christmas movie classic Beds, Stella is just echoing her movie sons Bolka at the Christmas Eve board To the soup (74) a Miroslav Donutil (72). But the opposite is true! With her own grace and humor, she was able to overcome them…

Message off the top of my head

Most of the script written by Petr Jarchovský (57) was perfectly memorized. But when they filmed the scene in which he first sees plastic glasses from »comrades from the GDR« Ginger she declared quite spontaneously: “A miracle… And the glass workers will have nothing to eat!” Director Jan Hrebejk (56) remembered it after some time, saying that Stella broke them down with this announcement. “She just nailed it and it fit so well… She was perfect,” he complimented her.

Matko, nes*r!

In the film, however, you can also see the »demolished« Zázvorková herself. She got the most out of it when Polívka said the now-classic sentence: “Mother, don’t fuck!” She felt good among the “young people”, as she used to with Menšík and Sovák. Stella was simply a born comminda. “I love laughter, I long to hear it from the audience, it is a form of narcotic. This is my balm, the elixir of youth,” claimed the actress, who was and still is loved by film and television viewers of all generations.

Christmas at Werich’s

Together with her colleague Jaroslava Adamová (†87), Stella Zázvorková was one of the only two women who were allowed to go to Jan Werich’s (†75) show on Christmas Day. “Invite that guy Zázvorková, too!” Werich said with gusto. It is a fact that both actresses were extremely intelligent, they knew how to make fun of themselves, and they also had a “male approach” to gossip – they did not spread it themselves, and if someone confided in them, he could be sure that they would keep the secret!

Small and round

The first name Zázvorková comes from the Latin word »stella« or star. This was also the name of the heroine of the French novel, which the actress’s mother read during her pregnancy. She wanted her daughter to be just as beautiful… »Small and Round« Stella did not live up to her expectations, even though she was a star of the first magnitude in terms of acting!
