Potato Theft in Egypt: Ministry of Interior Responds with Arrests and Seizures

Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – Activists circulated on the “X” platform a video clip of some people stealing a transport truck loaded with potatoes, unloading some of the containers from it while it was driving during the day on a road in Egypt, while the Ministry of Interior responded by issuing A post revealing the details of the incident.

The Ministry of Interior said in a post on its official account on the “X” platform, previously Twitter, that “information and investigations from the Public Security Sector, in coordination with the Qalyubia Security Directorate, confirmed the formation of elements of a gang consisting of (12 people, including 6 with criminal information) who specialized in their criminal activity.” In stealing fruits loaded on transport vehicles, in an “inattentive” manner, by taking them in (truck) vehicles, and driving behind those cars, taking advantage of the low-speed movement of the cars as they approached the industrial zone in the Obour Police Department, cutting off the bags and stealing some of their cargo.

The ministry added in its publication: “After codifying the procedures, they were arrested, and when confronted, they admitted to committing the incident as indicated.”

The Ministry added, “With their guidance, they seized the tuk-tuk and 5 tricycles, without license plates, used in the incident.”

The Ministry confirmed that “legal measures have been taken.”

The Ministry attached its post with a camouflaged image of the faces of the people who were caught with the items used in the theft.
