Petar Stoyanov Remembers Henry Kissinger: An Era Passed Away

One of the Bulgarians who communicated the most with Henry Kissinger is the president (1997-2022) Petar Stoyanov. We caught up with him by phone – he was at the airport on his way to an international conference in Guangzhou, China, on today’s global challenges.

“Henry Kissinger lived a long time, he was a contemporary of the Cold War, he made a significant contribution to the new course of the USA in relation to China, he saw the fall of the Berlin Wall, the building of new democracies in Eastern Europe and even Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. – said Petar Stoyanov “During all this time he played an active role in both American and world diplomacy and politics. He also wrote magnificent books that will be read for a hundred years to come.”

In all my meetings with him, I was impressed not only by his deep erudition and intellect, but also by his unconventional and sometimes paradoxical way of thinking. At our first meetings, respected by his presence, I almost didn’t take the word – what smart can you say in the presence of Henry Kissinger.
Later, every time I visited New York, I did not miss the opportunity to see him, in recent years he was much more talkative, and I took advantage of every such opportunity.

With his death, an entire era passed away. I am sure that both his many admirers and his enemies will remember him with respect. We will miss his personality and his brilliant analyses,” said Petar Stoyanov.
