Overheating PS5 Consoles Cause Damage to USB Ports at E-Sports Event

Several of the PS5 consoles used at the recent Evo tournament in Las Vegas have overheated to the point that the melting USB ports have damaged some of the contestants’ dedicated controllers, prompting widespread complaints and even a call to switch from the PlayStation 5 to other gaming platforms.

Due to AMD’s efficient 7nm chipset, the Sony PlayStation 5 (from 459 euros at Amazon) usually not too hot or noisy even during long gaming sessions, at least under normal living room conditions. However, some PS5 consoles could not withstand the constant load at an e-sports event in the US state of Nevada.

According to a report by my city Several participants in the tournament, which was all about so-called “beat ’em up” games such as Street Fighter 6 and Mortal Kombat, complained that some even caused annoying material damage to the overheating PlayStation 5. While the Sony console itself would have been relatively easy to replace, the special controllers used by professional gamers connected to a USB cable fell victim to the hot PS5.

A participant describes on Reddit for example the curious situation when his opponent politely pulled his controller out of the PS5 and handed it to him after the game. It wasn’t until the next match that the gamer noticed that parts of the PlayStation 5’s USB port got stuck on his controller cable during this action, which seems to have been the main symptom of the consoles overheating. Only the rear USB sockets were affected.

After the events, there were voices on Twitter that the tournament should switch to other gaming platforms such as PC or Xbox consoles to avoid such annoying problems in the future. Sony itself has not yet commented on the incident. PS5 owners who use their console normally shouldn’t have much to worry about overheating USB ports, though.
