(CNN) — North Korea announced Thursday that it held a grand ceremony to mark the launch of a home-made “tactical nuclear attack submarine” named “Hero Kim Geun-ok”, according to the official Korean Central News Agency.
The agency stated that the North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un, attended the launch ceremony, which “marks a milestone in strengthening the country’s naval power, and demonstrated the unwavering will of the party and government to continue strengthening the country’s nuclear deterrence by making great leaps for regional and global peace and security.”
According to the news agency, the North Korean leader said that “the submarine will perform its combat mission as one of the basic underwater offensive means of the naval forces.”
“The Central Committee of the party decided to make greater leaps forward in the country’s shipbuilding industry in order to ensure a new peak to greatly enhance the naval power,” he added.
He emphasized that “there is no room for retreat in the campaign to expand the marine shipbuilding industry because it is the highest priority task that must be accomplished without fail.”
Kim Jong Un stressed the importance of modernizing the armed forces, strengthening nuclear armament, and arming the navy with nuclear weapons.
“The submarine launching ceremony, which was held before the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, will be engraved in the country’s history as a historical event that deserves special note in the history of strengthening naval power, the history of building the country’s nuclear power in the great era of Kim Jong-un, and as an important occasion,” the news agency said.
