New Yorkers say they would get third dose of vaccine

Mobile vaccination centers like this one could soon be putting up a third dose of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, if the federal government’s Food and Drug Administration approves, as expected, a booster dose for people with immune problems.

New Yorkers like Rosa Díaz who received the Pfizer vaccine, or Manuel Calle who received the Moderna vaccine, say they would get this eventual third dose.

“I do wear it anyway, because I am already 70 years old and I need to have protection … you have to complete the dose because if it is for your good you have to do it,” said Rosa.

“If necessary, I would put it on, because I put on the Modern one first. We were the first to get vaccinated, ”said Manuel.

The idea is that people with weakened immune systems take another dose to increase antibodies and prevent severe symptoms and even hospitalizations for the new variants of Covid.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, known as the CDC, estimate that around nine million people would qualify for a booster shot.

“What it is going to do is increase the person’s antibody numbers compared to the same ones we already have at the moment and this helps people with immunocompromise,” explained Dr. Ramon Tallaj, from SOMOS.

The apparently imminent possibility of a third dose of the vaccine occurs at a time when there are still millions of people in the country who have not been vaccinated.

In addition, at times when the Delta variant continues to cause damage, and precisely in many places where there are low vaccination rates is where there are more infections and hospitalizations.

If a third dose is approved, some who have not yet been vaccinated say they definitely will not.

“Less I could. Suddenly up to two doses one can give up. But now three of them seems horrible to me, ”said a neighbor.

“Really, that scares me. For three vaccinations and at the age one is, that is very horrible, “added another neighbor.

The CDCs are expected to hold a hearing to discuss the use of a booster shot.
