New Yorkers Can Now Receive Emergency Alerts via Text Message with Notify NYC ESP

Carlos Polanco lives in Coney Island and remembers that 11 years ago there was no information at hand to know what to do in case of emergencies.

Marking the 11th anniversary of Superstorm Sandy, Mayor Eric Adams announced that the city has taken steps to ensure New Yorkers are prepared for any situation.

From now on you just need to send a text message with the word NOTIFYNYCESP to the number 692-692 to receive alerts from the city.

Having information at hand, how important is it?

“Well, I think it is quite important because we walk on the street, we leave our homes to work and the information is the best there can be,” said Carlos Polanco, a Brooklyn resident.

-And in Spanish now!

“Exactly, yes.”

Basically, authorities are asking citizens to register with Notify NYC, New York City’s official source for information on emergency events.

This is a free service provided by the New York City Office of Emergency Management.

Notify NYC ESP will now have information updates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in Spanish and on all kinds of emergencies, from winter storms to terrorist threats.

-There is information on traffic delays, public transportation, road closures, floods, etc.

“Complete, of course, it’s very good,” added Polanco.

You can also register to receive alerts online, via email, telephone, social networks such as X, and instant messaging.

Since 2009, this information service has kept more than one million New Yorkers up to date on all types of emergencies, in real time and in several languages.

“Yes, I think it has to be in all languages, so that there is better communication,” said Mario Ubaldo.

-Is it better to be safe than sorry?

“Exactly, that’s right!”

-How important is the information?

“It’s a lot, because that’s how we know before things happen, for me it’s good, it’s very good,” said Catalina Campos.

Likewise, in an effort to keep citizens informed, the city will invest 373 thousand dollars for radio, television and social media campaigns to make the notify nyc application known to everyone.
