New York City Covered in Smoke from Canadian Forest Fire

Sepia sky and streets with a strangely orange sun. This is what the city looked like this Wednesday while the alert continues for poor air quality, a product of smoke from forest fires in Canada.

From Sunset Park in Brooklyn, famous for its views of the Manhattan skyline, it was impossible to make out the skyscrapers in the heavy fog.

“It is strange, the truth is that it is strange. One gets a little nervous about the children, they all worry,” said neighbor Rosalba Osorio.

The Department of Health recommended that New Yorkers stay home with windows closed, limit activities outside, and if it is necessary to go out, wear high-quality masks such as the KN95 or N95.

Those who most need to protect themselves are the elderly, children, and those with chronic medical conditions and compromised immune systems.

Mayor Eric Adams announced that all outdoor activities have been canceled until further notice and that New York’s air quality index has reached 484 on a maximum scale of 500. A clean air index is less than 100.

And in Sunset Park there are those who went out to see the panorama out of curiosity and others out of pure necessity.

Torres.

“We were saying that it looks post-apocalyptic right now, that it looks like ‘Blade Runner’r, like a world like that…I had never seen New York like this since I moved here about eight years ago,” said Esteban Torres. “Everyone should have a mask now, but aha, I’m just being irresponsible.”

“Sadness in the deterioration of the environment, in the deterioration of the ecology, of the ecosystem, so many animals must be disappearing in the face of these fires,” said the street vendor of ceviche Mauricio Ambrosio.

“You have to wear a mask because it can hurt us over time, it is dangerous, it looks ugly,” said Marisol Mexquititla.

According to data from the city, we are experiencing the worst air quality since the 1960s.

Experts predict that conditions may temporarily improve this Thursday morning to worsen again later.

The air is expected to clear significantly on Sunday due to changes in the winds.

Authorities are asking New Yorkers to help out by checking to see if their elderly neighbors are okay or need help.
