Mr. Difficult: A Humorous and Profound Film on Understanding Depression

Are there people around you who are difficult to get along with? If so, I recommend you to watch Tom Hanks’ “Mr. Difficult”. I watched this movie recently and was so moved that I couldn’t help myself. I want to recommend this great movie to everyone! This film actually deals with a very heavy issue of depression, but it uses a very light and interesting way for the public to understand. It is humorous, healing, profound and thought-provoking. The director’s shooting techniques, perfect casting, the actors’ superb performances and the film’s soundtrack are all perfect, making the viewers feel as if they were on a rollercoaster, laughing loudly from time to time, and at the same time I burst into tears many times. This film really brilliantly provides us with a completely different perspective to view and understand depression. I highly recommend it to everyone! After watching this film, you will definitely have a stronger and softer heart to deal with the world.

In the film, Tom Hanks plays Otto, a cynical old man. The death of his beloved wife six months ago made him lose the motivation to live, but he still patrols the community every morning and cares about his neighbors. Insist on maintaining the order that should exist in life. He seems to dislike everyone, has bad words, and often rolls his eyes, but he is actually very soft, self-disciplined, and eager to help others. From the very beginning of the movie, the perfect appearance of Tom Hanks, the world-weary old man, brought the movie to its climax. The performance was vivid but not too cliche, especially the eye-rolling one that was so cute! It is indeed a box office guarantee in my mind.

Through this film, I want to talk a little bit about depression. The “widowhood” portrayed in the film is clinically an important risk factor for depression. The pain of widowhood has made many people unable to escape. Grief, falling into the abyss, and ending one’s life. The difficulty is that patients with depression are not easily understood by others. In fact, each of us has encountered sad and painful things in this life, causing symptoms of depression. Everyone may be depressed due to psychological or social factors in the surrounding environment. Most people have mild symptoms and can survive. When the disease comes out, a small number of people may be so depressed that they cannot continue their daily lives. Symptoms may include depression, self-blame, world-weariness, lack of hope, lack of motivation to go out, etc., and meet the diagnostic criteria for depression “lasting for more than 2 weeks.” If you or someone around you has such symptoms, please be patient with yourself or your friends and call 1925 for assistance (further reading:Are you stressed and want to talk to someone, but do you think psychological counseling is too expensive?Check out cheap and affordable psychological counseling resources at once), such a situation must receive help before it will get better. Every patient with depression may seem unpleasant and difficult to get along with at the moment of onset, just like Mr. Difficult in the movie, but please don’t forget that every patient with depression is like a young Mr. Difficult. Just like Mr. Go, he was the young, hopeful, energetic, smiling and helpful Otto! They are just sick, have temporarily forgotten that self, and need time to find it back. What we can give is a little more warmth, tolerance and time, just like the angel neighbor Marisol in the film. The smile and care she gave Otto became the reason for Otto to live.

Some people say that depression means being unable to think clearly, being dissatisfied, and being difficult to get along with. These are all incorrect! It is a “disease” that needs to be understood and treated to get better. Moreover, the causes of depression are very complex. The following reasons may cause depression:

Genetically inherited life stress: such as unemployment, financial pressure to have a child, financial crisis, illness, cancer, loneliness or the loss of a loved one, etc., may all cause depression. Insufficient neurotransmitters (such as serotonin and dopamine) in the brain. Personality: When a person’s personality is more pessimistic, stubborn, and often thinks negatively, he or she is more likely to suffer from depression.

In addition to the above-mentioned symptoms of depression, self-blame, world-weariness, lack of hope, lack of motivation to go out, etc., the symptoms of depression can even become more serious, such as losing the desire to eat, losing weight significantly, and feeling like a different person, with all the thoughts in the mind. It’s better to go back.

Modern medicine is really advanced. If you find that you or someone around you is suspected of suffering from depression, please do not let yourself or others face it alone. Nowadays, there are many scientifically proven and effective treatments, including drug treatment and psychotherapy. As long as you cooperate with professional doctors and psychological counselors, you will one day be able to get out of the haze and find your once vibrant self. Clinically, countless people suffer from depression when they experience some important moments of loss in their lives. After a period of treatment, they fully recover and stop taking medication. Please believe that depression can be relieved or cured with medical help.

Finally, I would like to remind everyone that for people with depression, what we should do is not to tell them not to die, but to help them find a reason to live. I wish everyone in the world can live happily.
