Mexico revises the number of deaths from COVID-19

After an updated tally, the number of deaths from coronavirus in Mexico increased by 60%.

Mexico has recounted the number of deaths associated with COVID-19 – the figure increased by 60%. About it informs BBC on Monday 29 March.

More than 321,000 people have died from complications related to COVID-19 in Mexico, according to new data – the country ranked second in the world in this indicator after the United States, where 562,000 people died.

At the same time, Mexico moved Brazil, where 312 thousand people died, to the third stage.

The revision of statistics in Mexico affected data from the beginning of the pandemic until the sixth week of 2021. Previously, the number of deaths during this period was estimated at 182,301, and according to new data, at 294,287. Since mid-February, another 26,772 people have died from coronavirus in Mexico.

In turn, Mexican President Manuel López Obrador is criticized for his actions during the crisis – the opposition accuses him of downplaying the severity of the pandemic and of delaying vaccinations. The country also notes a low level of testing and a shortage of beds in intensive care units.

Recall that three out of four COVID vaccinations in the world accounted for ten countries. The COVAX mechanism is under threat due to high demand for vaccines in high-income countries, WHO says.
