Lockdown in Austria: tens of thousands protested

Austria protests against lockdown

From November 22, the Austrian government will introduce a nationwide lockdown for all residents of the country, and from February the country will introduce compulsory vaccinations.

Tens of thousands of people took part in a protest in Vienna against the new antiquated measures of the Austrian government on Saturday 20 November. The Vienna police have estimated the approximate number of protesters in the city at 35 thousand people.

According to the organizers of the event from the right-wing populist Austrian Freedom Party, over 100 thousand people took part in the protests.

The protest march almost completely paralyzed traffic in the center of Vienna. Participants chanted “Freedom”, carried banners condemning the government’s anti-coronavirus policies, many of them without FFP2 medical masks, which are mandatory in Austria.

“The situation is tense,” a representative of the city police commented on the situation.

However, despite occasional incidents in which demonstrators threw bottles at police officers, the rally was relatively calm. Ten people were detained for violation of public order.

New lockdown and mandatory vaccination

From November 22, the Austrian government will introduce a nationwide lockdown, which will apply to all residents of the country, including those vaccinated and ill, said Federal Chancellor of Austria Alexander Schallenberg on November 19.

This decision was made in connection with a sharp increase in the number of new cases being infected with a coronavirus infection. This will be the fourth lockdown in Austria since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

Leaving your home without good reason will be prohibited. All cultural and recreational activities in the country will be canceled.

Schallenberg called the lockdown a very difficult decision. He promised that the new restrictions will last no more than 20 days and that no later than December 13, 2G rule will come into force, according to which vaccinated and ill citizens will enjoy greater freedom. It is planned to evaluate the first results of the lockdown in ten days.

In addition, the country’s leadership decided that from February 1, 2022, vaccination against coronavirus in Austria will become mandatory. “We do not want the fifth wave, we do not need the sixth and seventh waves, the virus will not go away, but will remain,” the Chancellor explained the introduction of new measures.
