Justin Trudeau Unveils New Childcare Measures in 2024 Budget Announcement

Traveling to British Columbia, Justin Trudeau unveiled new measures for the 2024 budget, this time relating to childcare services. The Prime Minister of Canada notably announced the creation of a billion-dollar loan program to create new affordable daycare spaces.

On Wednesday, Justin Trudeau also unveiled measures that will appear in the 2024 federal budget, which must be presented on April 16. These measures concern tenants. Those from Thursday morning relate to childcare costs.

While traveling in Surrey, British Columbia, the Prime Minister of Canada recalled the existence of child care at $10 per day. However, he recognized that too few families have access to these places, and that childcare costs are a strain on their budget.

Affordable child care gives mothers and fathers the opportunity to build their careers, said Justin Trudeau. They also help families save money and give children the best possible start in life.

The Prime Minister thus announced the launch of a new loan program for the expansion of childcare services. Public and non-profit child care providers will benefit from $1 billion in low-cost loans and $60 million in non-repayable grants.

The objective is to encourage them to create new places and renovate their current daycare centers.

The Prime Minister also announced student loan forgiveness for early childhood educators in rural and remote areas.

This measure is intended to encourage educators to work in smaller communities and to help families obtain the child care services they need. For this, $48 million over four years will be invested.

Ottawa also wants to increase training for early childhood educators. Ten million dollars over two years will be invested in order to have the talent necessary to carry out the expansion of affordable, quality childcare services, indicates the Prime Minister’s office.

Nearly $70 million for British Columbia

Taking advantage of his visit to British Columbia, Justin Trudeau announced a measure that will specifically concern the province.

The federal government will invest $69.9 million through the Early Learning and Child Care Infrastructure Fund. This investment will create more child care spaces and more spaces at a more affordable price for British Columbia families, says the Prime Minister’s Office.

Normally, the government does not reveal the contents of the annual budget before it is presented to the House of Commons. These announcements, like those of Wednesday, were made several weeks before the publication of the Liberals’ next budget, which should be presented on April 16.
