ISIS Fights Kurdish Forces in Syria, 129 Killed

HASAKA, KOMPAS.COM – Militia ISIS fight with Kurdish forces in the northeast region Syria.

The battle between the US-backed Kurdish forces and the ISIS militia took place in Hasaka City, Syria, and has been going on since Thursday (20/1/2022).

The attack on the Ghwayran prison was one of the most ambitious attacks by ISIS since the group was defeated in Syria nearly three years ago.

The overcrowded prison holds 3,500 suspected ISIS members including some of its leaders, a monitoring group said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that hundreds of prisoners had been recaptured after the attack broke out.

However, some detainees are still on the run and have not been arrested as reported BBC.

Kurdish security forces have besieged prisons and are struggling to control the immediate surroundings.

Meanwhile, residents near the incident site chose to flee their homes.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights added that at least 129 people were killed in the clashes.

Of the number of victims who died, 84 people were ISIS militiamen who died while 45 people were from the stronghold Kurdish forces.

Meanwhile, ISIS claimed in a video on January 22 that many of its members had been released in the raid on the prison.

The footage also shows ISIS fighters holding a number of hostages.
