Iranian Attempt to Seize Tankers in Strait of Hormuz Thwarted by US Navy

The US Central Command and the US Fifth Fleet reported that on the morning of July 5, the Iranians made an attempt to seize two tankers in the Strait of Hormuz and even opened fire on one of them.

“Both incidents took place in international waters off the coast of Oman. The hijacking of the ships was prevented thanks to the intervention of US warships,” the statement said. There were no casualties.

Over the past two years, Iran has seized five tankers and has attempted to seize several more. Most of the incidents occurred in the area of ​​the Strait of Hormuz, through which passes up to 20% of the world’s oil trade.
