“We were severely berated by the residents, even our colleagues were stoned. They accused me of being God for determining whether someone has Covid-19 or not. People threatened to come and destroy my house,” said Obet.

The people who live in Timika City are not much different.

“Especially those who live in boarding houses, it is the most difficult for our officers to find because they are afraid of the stigma of other neighbors,” he said.

When viewed from a medical point of view, discrimination that is often experienced by the families of Covid-19 patients can affect the health conditions of victims, especially mental health.

A study published in New Directions for Youth Development shows that the effects of expulsion can cause mental disorders such as anxiety, fear of exclusion, and even prolonged depression.

Moreover, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the arrival of the corona virus (Covid-19) can cause stress for people.

Fear and anxiety about an extraordinary illness, such as Covid-19, can cause strong emotions in both adults and children.

Researchers have found that some individuals may experience mental health problems for the first time during a pandemic. Adjustment problems, depression, and anxiety may arise.

A 2017 study recorded in the Bulletin of the World Health Organization, shows that there is an increasing number of people reporting mental health and psychosocial problems during the Ebola virus disease outbreak in Sierra Leone.

Therefore, WHO recommends seeking information only from trusted sources and especially so that we can take steps to prepare plans and protect ourselves and loved ones from the transmission of Covid-19.

Furthermore, Obet also hopes that citizens must dare to eliminate indifference to the Covid-19 pandemic. So, the government can break the chain of spreading Covid-19.

Mimika Regency has the second highest number of positive Covid-19 cases in Papua Province.

There were more than 2,500 cases of Covid-19 in Mimika, 2,100 of whom were declared cured and 25 people died.
