As part of a rally in support of opposition leader Alexei Navalny and other Russian political prisoners, Kashevarov put on a loincloth, a wreath of barbed wire and handcuffed himself to the fence of the embassy in a crucifixion position.

“On August 3, 1976, an inscription appeared on the wall of the Peter and Paul Fortress: “You crucify freedom, but the human soul knows no shackles.” It was an action by artists Yuli Rybakov and Oleg Volkov in protest against the persecution of dissidents in the USSR. The federal coordinator of the movement held a similar action today – Alexander Kashevarov,” reads the description of the photographs.

As explained in the movement, the action is timed to coincide with the anniversary of the return to Russia of politician Alexei Navalny, as a result of which he was detained and is now in a colony.

“It was Navalny’s arrest that became the starting point at the beginning of mass political repressions across the country… All Navalny’s structures were recognized as extremist, and other representatives of independent politics are recognized weekly as foreign agents. However, despite all the trials, protest ideas continue to grow in society, which portends resurrection of the opposition movement in Russia!” – considers “Spring”.

Kashevarov left Russia while still a schoolboy after he became a suspect under an article of the Criminal Code on repeated violations of the rules for holding rallies, he said in an interview. Radio Svoboda. A court in the Russian Federation sentenced him to five days of arrest for allegedly organizing a rally in memory of politician Boris Nemtsov. The activist left the country with a backpack “with clothes and collected works of Leonid Andreev.”

In an interview, he explained that he was subjected to active persecution because after the closing of Navalny’s headquarters in Chelyabinsk, no opposition events took place, except for the actions of the Vesna movement. “That is, I pose a political danger to them on a regional scale. That is why they began to persecute me. This is very insulting, but also flattering, on the other hand,” the activist noted.
