SURABAYA, KOMPAS.com – Cases of HIV/AIDS in the City Surabaya to be the highest in East Java in 2021. The number of cases of people with HIV/AIDS in the city in 2021 reached 323 people.

Head of City Health Office SurabayaNanik Sukristina said the HIV/AIDS sufferers are currently in the treatment process or have received treatment by the municipal government Surabaya.

Nanik ensured, sufferers and people infected with HIV do not show any symptoms.

Nanik explained, in its spread, this virus more often infects heterosexual groups and sexual orientation between men and women.

Meanwhile, the age most affected by this virus is the age of 25 to 44 years.

“But the highest age is the age of 25 to 29 years, then followed by the age of 30 to 32 years. The most affected are men with a percentage of 73 percent,” said Nanik at the Surabaya Health Office, Tuesday (18/1/2022).

As for the type of work that is prone to contracting the HIV/AIDS virus, it is employees with a percentage of 46.2 percent. Followed by housewives with 18.9 percent, and entrepreneurs with 14.6 percent.

Then, in certain sexual groups, namely 46 percent homosexual, 49 percent heterosexual, and 2.3 percent bisexual.

“Education and prevention are important, especially for families. Because housewives are also at risk of being exposed to the virus,” said Nanik.

He said that the sub-districts with the most HIV/AIDS sufferers were Sawahan and Tambaksari sub-districts.

“That’s why we are trying to make an early discovery, so that we can provide intervention and the chance of recovery will be greater,” he said.

For the treatment, Nanik explained that the Surabaya Health Office provides free medical services provided by 13 health centers and 10 hospitals in the city of Surabaya.

It also provides assistance, counseling, and home care to the homes of people living with HIV, as well as providing support.

“The village also provides milk and food for people who can’t afford it. We also always provide comprehensive information on prevention of transmission, which we routinely do to schools, students, groups of entertainment workers and the wider community who are vulnerable to this disease,” he said.

Not only that, his party also formed outreach officers who reached risk groups by accessing HIV tests at the Surabaya City Health Office services.

It also monitors the provision of treatment with regular checks, and coordinates with the Culture, Youth, and Sports and Tourism Offices to visit entertainment houses.

“In the last five years, until 2021 there was a significant decrease compared to 2018, which was the highest. So we continue to carry out screening and the City of Surabaya also has an active AIDS Commission (KPA) in 31 sub-districts,” he said.
