Rome’s Pope Francis on Sunday expressed concern about a drop in the birth rate.
“Many couples do not choose a child or choose only one child. It is a tragedy, ”Francis said, following a traditional prayer from the angel of the Lord, addressing thousands of people in the rainy St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican.
The Pope emphasized the decline in the birth rate in Italy, which could be partly due to the pandemic. He spoke of a “demographic winter” to be overcome in the name of the family and the future.
A letter written by the head of the Roman Catholic Church to all married couples was published on Sunday, emphasizing that “children are always a gift.”
Francis said that “children need a sense of security that allows them to believe in you and the beauty of your life together, and that they will never be alone, no matter what they face.”
