LIVE – Budget 2026: National Assembly Rejects Tax Increase on Biofuels
PARIS – In a significant blow to the government’s financial plan, the National Assembly today rejected a proposed tax increase on two biofuels, escalating uncertainty surrounding the passage of the 2026 budget. The vote signals deepening divisions within the left-wing opposition and raises the possibility of the government resorting to unprecedented measures to manage state finances.
The rejection throws the budget’s future into question, possibly triggering a legislative standoff and forcing the government to consider enacting laws by ordinance – a procedure never before utilized. Should Parliament fail to reach an agreement by December 23rd, the state could face a freeze on expenditures and rely on existing tax laws, delaying a comprehensive budget resolution until early 2026. this outcome would necessitate a special law to authorize continued tax collection.
The vote comes amidst a complex political landscape. While the socialist deputies, led by Boris Vallaud, initially indicated they would vote against the budget in its current form, the first secretary of the PS, Olivier Faure, suggested on Monday that a path to adoption remained “possible,” albeit “narrow.” This position has drawn criticism from both La france Insoumise (LFI) and the ecologists, with Cyrielle Chatelain, head of the environmentalist deputies, expressing confusion over the PS’s pursuit of compromise.
Should the initial draft be rejected, it will proceed to the Senate in its original form, initiating a parliamentary shuttle process. The outcome will determine whether the government can secure its financial plan or be compelled to implement emergency measures to avoid a budgetary crisis.
