Former Proud Boys Leader Sentenced to 22 Years for Capitol Storming

A court in the District of Columbia (USA) has sentenced former Proud Boys leader Henry (Enrique) Tarrio to 22 years in prison in connection with the storming of the Capitol in January 2021. Prosecutors demanded 33 years in prison for the accused.

To date, this is the most severe sentence in the Capitol case.

On August 31, Proud Boys leader Joseph Biggs was sentenced to 17 years in prison in the same case. On September 1, another leader of this organization, Ethan Nordin, was sentenced to 18 years in prison.

On February 27, 2021, the U.S. Department of Justice announced that more than 300 citizens were charged with federal violations of law in connection with the riots in and around the Capitol on January 6, 2021. At least 280 accused were detained. Among the defendants were dozens of right-wing activists Proud Boys and Oath Keepers.

Recall that five people died during the riots near the building and in the Capitol building: 1) US Air Force veteran Ashley Babbitt (35), who was fatally wounded after she was shot by a Capitol police officer, 2) Kevin Grison (55) from Alabama , who died of a heart attack, 3) Rosanna Boyland (34) from Georgia, who was apparently crushed by other participants in the assault, 4) Benjamin Philips (50) from Pennsylvania, who died of a stroke, 5) a US Capitol police officer Brian D. Siknik, who was seriously injured during clashes with protesters (he was a supporter of President Donald Trump, according to relatives). In addition, US authorities after the riots reported the death of 51-year-old Capitol police officer Howard Liebengood. According to the Associated Press, he may have committed suicide. This version has not been officially confirmed.
