NEW YORK – Authorities say a woman’s father, whose body was found last year in a park in New York City, was charged with her murder.
Kabary Salem was arrested in Egypt earlier this month and brought to the United States late last week, according to Staten Island Advance.
The body of Ola Salem, from Staten Island, was found on October 24, 2019 near Bloomingdale Park in Pleasant Plains. Salem, 25, was fully clothed but unconscious when she was found in a wooded area around 9:30 a.m.
The medical examiner ruled that Salem died of asphyxiation, including neck compression.
When his body was first identified, his friends and loved ones were shattered, describing Salem as a person of a “beautiful soul” with a contagious laugh. She worked at a shelter for Muslim women in Brooklyn and was the group’s first volunteer.
People who work there said he dedicated his life to protecting victims of domestic violence, and those who knew and loved Salem were stunned by his death.
Prosecutors had no immediate comment Sunday. The name of an attorney for the father was not immediately available. The reason for the crime is unknown.
Kabary Salem is a former professional middleweight boxer who fought in the Summer Olympics in 1992 and 1996.
