WASHINGTON മുൻ Former U.S. President Donald Trump’s Senate hearing on the atrocities at the Capitol Building has been expedited. Proceedings will begin on February 8. Trump was impeached by a House of Representatives with a majority of Democrats. The next step is the Senate hearing. The Democrats went ahead with the second impeachment with the goal of preventing Trump from running for re-election.
Both sides are equally strong in the Senate (50–50). A two-thirds majority is required to try and convict. It also needs the support of 17 Republicans. If Trump is to run again, the Senate must hold another vote on the issue.
Trump has resigned as the first president to be impeached twice. This is the first time in U.S. history that an outgoing president faces trial. No president has been impeached or ousted in the US. Andrew Johnson (1868) and Bill Clinton (1998) were impeached by the House of Representatives but acquitted by the Senate. Richard Nixon resigned in 1974 when the threat of impeachment arose. In 2019, Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives but acquitted by the Senate.
