High dose of blood thinners prevents more serious corona | Science

A high dose of blood thinners can prevent corona patients from becoming seriously ill. They can also recover better through treatment with these anticoagulants. This is evident from interim results of a worldwide study among approximately 1,400 moderately ill corona patients.

These are patients who have been admitted to hospital, but who are not in intensive care. The high doses have been shown to be more effective than the usual amount of drugs to prevent blood clots, the study shows.

Blood clots

“Since the start of the pandemic, doctors around the world have seen an increase in blood clots and inflammation in patients with Covid-19. Those clots lead to complications. These include lung failure, heart attack, or stroke. Now we know that it is. giving a higher dose of blood thinners is safe and effective for this group, “says Lennie Derde, intensivist at the UMC Utrecht hospital and researcher.

How the blood clots develop is still unclear. That should reveal further research. “It’s something that every doctor at the bedside recognizes, but we still know little about,” she says.

Reversed

Almost every corona patient receives blood thinners, but in low doses. It was already known that critically ill patients with Covid-19 should not receive a high dose, because this can be harmful to them.

Third, together with physician-microbiologist and UMC Utrecht colleague Marc Bonten, coordinates global research in Europe. According to her, this treatment can help to reduce the pressure on intensive care units.
