According to the USA Today website, the Earth has shown a clear warming trend over the past 100 years. However, if warming temperatures on Earth are associated with temperatures on Jupiter, Neptune, Mars and Pluto which have also warmed over the past 100 years, this is an incorrect statement.

There is no evidence of recent warming on Jupiter, Neptune or Mars, according to the researchers

“The simplest problem with that statement is that it’s very difficult to measure the temperature of other planets remotely,” Luke Moore, a professor and planetary scientist at Boston University, told USA TODAY in an email.

Jupiter

James Sinclair, a research scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, told USA TODAY in an email that there is no evidence to support the claim that Jupiter’s temperature has increased globally over the past 100 years.

In fact, according to Sushil Atreya, a professor of climate and space science at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, there isn’t enough temperature data to show global trends.

“The first and only systematic measurement of Jupiter’s heat balance was made by Voyager four decades ago,” he told USA TODAY in an email.

More conclusive systematic measurements will be needed to detect changes in global temperatures since then, he said.

More limited measurements over the past few decades have shown temperature fluctuations in “different regions of the atmosphere and different parts of the planet,” Atreya said. “But they’re not representative of the planet’s overall temperature.”

Neptune

Michael Roman, a planetary scientist at the University of Leicester, said there is no evidence to suggest that Neptune has warmed globally in the past 100 years. Reliable planetary measurements only started 20 years ago, he said.

“Most of Neptune’s observable atmosphere appears to have cooled since reliable measurements began,” Roman said.

Glenn Orton, a senior research scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, also told USA TODAY in an email that Neptune’s temperature record is too short to determine temperature trends over the past 100 years.

Mars

Similarly, temperature data from Mars only goes back about 50 years, not 100, according to Michael Mischna, a planetary scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

This record is also a gag and doesn’t show long-term warming, according to Richard Zurek, chief scientist for the Mars Program Office at the same NASA lab.

“While the temperature of the Martian atmosphere was observed during Viking missions in the 1970s, very few observations were made until the Mars Global Surveyor entered Mars orbit in the late 1990s,” he said .

“While we’ve had much better data coverage since then, there doesn’t appear to be any general warming trend on Mars.”
