Epidemiologist concerned about the corona situation in Lower Saxony | NDR.de – news

The corona situation in Lower Saxony worries scientists: The epidemiologist Berit Lange pleads for stronger restrictions if the number of infections remains at a high level.

“The development in Lower Saxony is worrying,” said the scientist from the Helmholtz Institute for Infection Research (HZI) in Braunschweig. “The number of infections has not fallen as much as in other federal states. There has rarely been a comparatively low number of reproductions as in Baden-Württemberg or Saxony.” In the past few weeks, a sideways movement has been observed in Lower Saxony. Recently, the number of infections has even increased.

Lange: “Supra-regional restrictions apparently not sufficient”

Berit Lange warns that you have to react to high numbers of infections.

“We have cities and counties with low Incidences, but also those with significantly higher values and a high R value, “said Lange. This value, the reproduction number, indicates how many people each infected person infects on average. The numbers in the districts that go in the wrong direction If the number of infections goes up, if the number of reproductions is above 1 and the positive rate is high, I have to take action as a city or district – even if there are supra-regional restrictions, as these are obviously not sufficient “said the HZI researcher.” The later I start, the more infections, severe courses and deaths I have for a few weeks.

Hanover region still rules out exit restrictions

The districts and health authorities analyzed exactly where the infection was happening. “If, for example, I have a lot of corona infections in my private life, curfews take effect. They mean that people no longer visit each other in the evening,” said the epidemiologist. “You also have to look closely at the areas of work, school and homes.” For example, the Hanover region has not yet been able to significantly reduce its high infection rates. The regional administration attributes this to the spread of the British mutant, but had recently ruled out measures such as exit restrictions for the time being.

“Other cities like Flensburg, which are heavily affected by the British variant, have tightened their restrictions at the local level,” said Lange. Because the Hanover region has almost 1.2 million inhabitants, these infection numbers have an impact on the national average. Lower Saxony has almost 8 million inhabitants.
