Erfurt (dpa / th) – In Thuringia, only a few anti-Semitic incidents are reported in schools every year. This emerges from an overview of the Thuringian Ministry of Education, which was available to the German Press Agency. Accordingly, only one incident was registered last and this year.

However, in the Corona year 2020, a large number of students were not at school for longer periods of time, but were taught at home. In 2019 there were four reported anti-Semitic incidents at Thuringian schools, in the previous year there were six.

“Anti-Semitism at school is a phenomenon that has long been criticized by Jewish youth and their families,” says the Thuringian Ministry of Education. According to his information, the school management and the school authorities make the decisions as to whether an event should be reported as a so-called special occurrence. The Ministry also receives reports of criminal offenses from the police.

The topic of anti-Semitism in schools has also occupied the Conference of Ministers of Education (KMK) since Wednesday. On Thursday, the ministers of education decided on a joint recommendation by the KMK, the Central Council of Jews in Germany and the Federal and State Commission of Anti-Semitism Commissioners on how to deal with anti-Semitism in schools.

The recommendation contains, among other things, assistance for teachers. Among other things, teacher training calls for a more intensive transfer of knowledge about anti-Semitism, Judaism and Jewish history and the present. Anti-Semitic statements and incidents should be named as such in schools and should not be trivialized, relativized, concealed or ignored, according to the KMK recommendation.
