Get rid of bacteria

Dr. Charles Puza, a board-certified dermatologist, reveals three effective methods to eliminate back acne, also known as “bacne”.

Around 50 million Americans suffer from acne, with athletes who wear sweaty gym clothes being particularly susceptible to unsightly back blemishes, according to experts.

Two of the most common types of acne are hormonal and fungal. Dr. Puza explains that hormonal acne is caused by fluctuations in hormone levels, resulting in an excessive production of oil that clogs the pores. Fungal acne, known as pityrosporum folliculitis, is often mistakenly identified as hormonal acne.

To tackle the issue, Dr. Puza recommends using Mupirocin ointment to get rid of bacteria that have colonized the skin. This cream aims to kill the bacteria and prevent their growth.

Furthermore, Dr. Puza suggests using a benzoyl peroxide wash, such as CeraVe Acne Foaming Cream Cleanser or Hibiclens Chlorhexidine Gluconate Solution 4.0% w/v, on the body to decolonize the staph bacteria. Benzoyl peroxide is effective for killing bacteria and unclogging pores by removing dead skin. However, it may stain towels and clothing, hence caution is advised.

Additionally, it is recommended that individuals who sweat or engage in regular workouts change their clothing as soon as possible and use a hypochlorous acid spray like options from Amazon or Tower 28 to eliminate bacteria. Hypochlorous acid spray acts as a disinfectant.

Other Measures to Combat Back Acne

Experts also suggest additional ways to address back acne. Using a long-handled sponge while showering can aid in cleaning the back. Undergoing a chemical peel and incorporating inflammation-fighting foods such as green leafy vegetables, fish, and tomatoes into the diet can also be helpful.

Wearing fabrics that wick away moisture while exercising is recommended, along with switching to whey-free protein powder as whey protein supplements have been linked to back acne.

It is crucial to address back acne to maintain proper hygiene and skin health. By following the tips provided by dermatologists like Dr. Puza, individuals can achieve clearer, healthier skin on their back.
