Current President Andrzej Duda has won the first round of the Polish presidential election by 41.8 percent. That showed the first exit polls last night. The final result is expected this week.

According to the exit polls, Duda, a member of the conservative governing party PiS (Justice and Justice), got it from Rafal Trzaskowski, the center-right mayor of Warsaw. With 30.4 percent, it had the second highest number of votes, for the independent candidate Szymon Holownia.

As none of the eleven candidates won more than half of the vote, a second round will come between Duda and Trzaskowski on July 12. Duda has long been labeled as the favorite, but saw its popularity wane.

The outcome of the elections is also watched with suspicion in Brussels. The European Commission has accused Duda and his government in recent years of undermining the independent rule of law with reforms. Trzaskowski, who could veto laws as president, has announced that he wants to block reforms that “erode democracy.”

The Poles know what is at stake and the corona crisis did not keep voters at home. With a 48 percent turnout, the first round set a record. Only 34 percent showed up in the last presidential election.
