150 meters from the beach…a shark turns a tourist trip into a tragedy

An Australian man was killed in a shark attack near a crowded beach in the French Pacific region of New Caledonia on Sunday.

The 59-year-old was swimming about 150 meters from the beach of Chateau Royal, in the capital, Noumea, when he was attacked by the shark.

According to local reports, two men sailing nearby raced to help the man, pulling him out of the water after he was bitten several times by the shark.

Emergency crews tried to save the Australian, who was injured in the leg and arms, but he died of serious injuries at the scene.

Tourists on the beach panicked and rushed out of the water before police evacuated the entire beach.

Nearby beaches have also been closed, and drones have been deployed to help search for sharks in the area.

An investigation will be conducted into the attack, especially as it took place in an area being monitored by rescuers.

The death followed two separate shark attacks last month, in which a swimmer and a surfer were each attacked near Chateau Royal beach.

New Caledonia is famous for its beautiful beaches and coral reefs rich in marine life.

The journey takes less than 4 hours from the east coast of Australia, which made the beach a comfortable place for Australian tourists to visit.
