Covid-19. In Italy, the government restrains the demonstrators

While theItaly getting ready for her 16e Saturday of demonstrations against the anti-Covid vaccine and the health pass – compulsory to work – the government is toughening the rules. Prohibition to demonstrate in “sensitive” places, such as historic centers and shopping areas, announced the Minister of the Interior, Luciana Lamorgese. Elsewhere, the prefects may also impose a static gathering.

There is no longer any question of demonstrating without a mask and without distancing. If 83% of Italians are vaccinated, contaminations are on the rise (8,000 cases in 24 hours and already 132,550 deaths in total). However, demonstrations are risky events, argues Luciana Lamorgese. In Trieste, a cluster of 200 cases is attributed to a recent gathering.

Clashes last Saturday

But these restrictions, the authorities are not hiding, are mainly aimed at avoiding reliving the excesses of recent weeks. Last Saturday, clashes broke out between the police and some demonstrators in Milan and Trieste. In early October, in Rome, opponents stormed the headquarters of the CGIL (Italian General Confederation of Labor) union and attempted to break into a hospital, before members of the neo-fascist movement Forza Nuova were arrested.

We must be careful that these rules are not used to prohibit any demonstration ”, worries, however, Maurizio Landini, secretary general of the CGIL. In Turin, Marco Liccione, a member of the local anti-vax committee, says his movement has not yet decided anything, for Saturday. But some irreducibles are already announcing the continuation of the rally, in Castello Square.
