Concerts: Corona sniffer dogs to sniff out infected people | NDR.de – news

Status: 23.07.2021 9:17 p.m.

In the “Back to Culture” project, the Hannover Veterinary University Foundation is testing the use of corona detection dogs at major events in cooperation with Hannover Concerts and ProEvent.

The Lower Saxony Ministry of Science is funding the study with 1.5 million euros. Science Minister Björn Thümler (CDU) said on Friday that it could be “a ray of hope for artists and organizers.” “If dogs should also prove their accuracy in this study, their use would offer the opportunity to minimize the risk of infection at large concerts or parties,” said Thümler.

Dogs showed high accuracy in saliva samples

According to the information, the pilot study by the University of Veterinary Medicine (TiHo) had already shown that dogs can distinguish saliva samples from corona infected people and healthy patients with a 94 percent accuracy. Sweat and urine also proved to be suitable sample material in a follow-up study.

Study planned in four phases

For the current study, four concerts are planned under different conditions: The number of participants, the prescribed minimum distance and the obligation to cover the mouth and nose vary. In the last phase, masks and spaces should be completely dispensed with. According to Thümler, one advantage of dogs is that they make their decision within seconds and are therefore much faster than rapid antigen tests. To determine whether the dogs are lying correctly, the result is checked with a rapid antigen test and PCR tests.
