China’s State Market Regulatory Authority announced the recall on Friday.
It said Tesla Motors in Beijing and Shanghai will use remote update technology to fix problems, so car owners won’t have to go to Tesla service centers to get updates in most cases.
The recall, related to problems with the automatic steering assist function, affects 1.6 million imported Tesla Model S, Model X, Model 3 and Model Y vehicles.
With the auto-steering function on, drivers may misuse the combined driving function, increasing the risk of accidents, the statement said.
The recall to prevent the door unlock logic control of imported Model S and Model X EVs affects 7,538 vehicles built between October 26, 2022 and November 16, 2023. This is necessary to prevent the door locks from opening during a collision.
The recalls follow more than 2 million Tesla electric cars being recalled in the US last month to improve driver monitoring systems.
The recall follows a two-year investigation by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which found the system to be defective. The goal of the upgrade is to make drivers using Tesla’s Autopilot system pay more attention to the road.
Documents filed by Tesla with the US government say online software changes will increase the number of alerts and warnings to drivers to keep their hands on the wheel.
