For the first time, researchers have succeeded in detecting oxygen molecules in a distant galaxy. Will space suits soon become superfluous and can astronauts breathe in space at some point?
The American Astronomical Society researchers discovered the oxygen molecules in the Markarian 231 galaxy.

Millions of light years away
The oxygen molecules were discovered using a so-called NOEMA interferometer, a device that measures the superposition of waves, and an IRAM 30 meter telescope. The catch is that the galaxy is 561 million light years from Earth, which is why the astronauts will probably not be able to breathe so quickly without space suit in space.

The researchers do not yet know how the oxygen molecules originated in the distant galaxy. However, the discovery is a big step for the researchers, since oxygen molecules have so far been difficult to find in space. As the research results of the scientists show, the galaxy is powered by at least one super massive black hole.
