The massive General Electric (GE9X) engines are 4.40 meters in diameter larger than the fuselage diameter of an Airbus A320. They are the world’s largest aircraft engines built to date. In terms of dimensions, the 777-9 model has a wingspan eight meters longer than a jumbo jet and, at almost 77 meters, also exceeds its length. This makes the 777X even longer than a giant A380, the production of which will end next year. With a list price of $ 442 million, the 777-9 is officially a little more expensive than a Boeing jumbo jet. However, there are huge discounts. A 777-9 is currently said to cost a good $ 200 million.
If the premiere flight of the 777X model works, it should deliver a small glimmer of hope to the ailing US group in what is probably the worst crisis in its history. Boeing’s image was badly damaged after two crashes of the smaller 737 Max. This aircraft has also been banned from flying worldwide since March 2019, which costs Boeing billions of dollars.
US security agency will examine the new model very closely
But the future of the new long-haul large-scale model is also not worry-free. The first flight was delayed again and again because of problems with the General Electric engines. The German manufacturer MTU Aero Engines also has a small stake of four percent in the mega engines. An extreme stress test of the fuselage made headlines, with a break just before the target value. Above all, Boeing currently lacks sufficient customers for the long-haul aircraft, which competes with the somewhat smaller Airbus model A350.
Lufthansa is one of the first customers of the 777X. When the airline can definitely use the US aircraft is open. The US security agency FAA will take an extremely close look at the new model after the fiasco with the approval of the 737 Max with obvious errors in the flight software. For this reason, some observers do not expect to be deployed by the airlines until mid-2021 or even later.

Airlines’ interest has stagnated since the first orders were placed at the Dubai Air Show in 2013. Recently there were even cancellations. For the two versions of the 777X, a good 300 firm orders and options from eight customers are still on the books, with a large part attributable to the airline Emirates, also a major customer of the giant Airbus A380. Lufthansa initially reduced its 34 firm orders to 20 plus 14 options. According to the original planning, the German airline wanted to introduce the next generation of its business class to the 777-9 this summer.
The hope of a large order from China was also not fulfilled for Boeing. The plane is probably too big for most markets and most airlines, says George Ferguson, an analyst with Bloomberg news agency. The trend does not necessarily go to giant planes, experts say, although air traffic is increasing steadily.
