The president of the Medef denounced Saturday, March 20, 2021 a “Relentlessness against businesses” after the decision of the government of a reconfinement of 16 departments, including those of Ile-de-France to fight against the spread of coronavirus, also worried about a return of the “Bureaucratic madness”.
“It is difficult to understand this relentlessness on businesses when a lot of efforts have been made in terms of health”, said Geoffroy Roux de Bézieux on Europe 1 on the decision to close so-called non-essential businesses from Saturday, to fight the rebound of the Covid-19 epidemic.
The boss of Medef criticizes the government in particular for incriminating businesses as being places of contamination: “It comes far behind families, businesses, loved ones”, he said, while conceding that there were “Progress to be made at the time of restoration”.
The Medef regrets a “democratic madness”
Regarding the closure criteria, “The bureaucratic madness will be put back in place as in the month of November”, he said, adding that he did not know whether DIY or electronics stores larger than 10,000 m2 would remain open or not.
“The principle of partial confinement of shops does not work”, he decided, repeating that “It is not in the shops that we get infected”.
On the macroeconomic level, he said he was “skeptical” of the government’s forecast of a 0.2 point drop in GDP due to these new measures. “I think it will be stronger than that”, he said, while 90,000 businesses will have to lower the curtain.
“The key is vaccination”, he estimated, citing the example of Great Britain, where 25 million people have been vaccinated, has been able to set up a “Calendar for the reopening of restaurants, from the beginning of May”.
